Fundraising Tips

  1. 01  Always ask people you meet for their business card. I’ve got thousands of them. Then when it’s time to do an annual or capital campaign you know whom to call first. People don’t say no to people they know. Once you get in the habit of asking everyone for their business card write down on the back where you met them. It could save embarrassment if you don’t remember.
  2. 02 Create an unforgettable first impression.
  3. 03 Emotion moves people to action. Lack of emotion leads to apathy. Fundraising is an emotional endeavor. Always ask with emotion.
  4. 04 When asking a prospect over the telephone for a donation, raise your voice one decibel. It will come through loud and clear that you believe what you are calling for matters to you.
  5. 05 An important factor in raising funds is the donor has a bond or association with the person asking or the non-profit. Once an association is made the result is a win-win situation.
  6. 06 Listen to yourself talk. Can the person you are talking to feel your incredible excitement and joy in what you are calling about? Can they hear laughter in your voice and genuine enthusiasm when you call? If they can the world is yours and success is only a telephone call away.
  7. 07 There are four key components to successful scriptwriting: clarity, interaction, visually descriptive, and personally positive.
  8. 08 Aim high, higher, highest!!! Don’t start asking for a low amount of money. Start by asking for a large amount. You can always come down but you can’t go back up.
  9. 09 Tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth!
